| EPIRB's MUST BE COMPLETELY RELIABLE! Since failure may be fatal, sailors expect all of their lifesaving equipment to work properly first time, every time. This is a very reasonable expectation, especially when one looks at EPIRB prices! EPIRB failure is not an option and any beacon failure must be considered to be totally unacceptable. In January 2004 the Equipped To Survive Foundation conducted a series of tests of 406 MHz GPS enabled EPIRB's and PLBs. The results showed that in some cases, even in ideal conditions, some beacons failed to reliably provide location data. We understand that McMurdo Ltd have made modifications to their products since the ESF 2004 tests and now also provide free upgrades to their pre-2005 units. We urge all holders of such EPIRB's to have them upgraded. When beacons do not acquire satellites quickly, battery efficiency is reduced to detrimental levels and may result in data never being transmitted because of this reduction in power! Plus, any delay in data being transmitted, due to poor or slow acquisition, can also mean inaccurate position transmission. THIS IS REALITY! EPIRB's can and do work, our point is that they may not and this has been proven. Whilst every yacht should have one aboard, it is our belief that every yacht should also have one of our Sea Survival or Amphibious Survival Packs on board too. Our packs will greatly improve a sailors chances of survival in a liferaft at sea; whether it be for a short period or for a protracted period of time. The equipment within our survival packs is exactly the same as the survival equipment issued to British Special Forces and Aircrew (we enjoy a good working relationship with the suppliers) It has then been further tested by us in adverse conditions. When you buy our survival packs, you pay for the best. Each pack also contains step by step unique and liferaft specific survival instructions. These instructions are printed on waterproof paper and are written by one of the partners of sailingunlimited; a former British and Australian Special Forces soldier. We consider the survival instructions alone to be beyond any monetary value. |
